East Midlands Architects

We believe the heart of England has a character of its own. From the Viaduct in rural Bennerley to the world-renowned Nottingham Playhouse, our work as leading East Midlands architects is shaped by our context.

Our housing projects have won RIBA recognition in the East Midlands. Our commercial buildings offer a sustainable base for the local economy. And our public and heritage architecture has quietly become part of the texture of the region.

With prudent design and environmental consideration at the core of our approach, we take pride in positioning ourselves as the East Midlands’ eco-architects of choice.

How we work: Serving the East Midlands

We aim to be one of the most forward-looking architects in the region. That requires an approach which embraces sustainability and new technology at every step of a project.

We work with a broad range of tools, from physical models to virtual reality and artificial intelligence, which allows each design to be tested from multiple viewpoints.

We are strong advocates of 3D LiDAR scanning, for example, which allows us to create a precise digital record of a site or building. This cutting-edge “digital twin” is invaluable, allowing owners to track changes, deterioration or structural issues over each five-year inspection cycle. A 3D laser scan can reveal micro-cracks, misalignments and early signs of subsidence, helping to avoid costly repair jobs later on.

We also look to the future by paying close attention to energy-efficiency. This can mean integrating solar panels and heat pumps into our designs, and closely following industry standards like Passivhaus, Enerphit and BREEAM.

Our toolkit of up-to-date technology allows us to stay at the forefront of the industry, bringing the best current techniques to our East Midlands architecture

Trent basin phase one

Our planning team designed Trent Basin, a new residential neighbourhood on the north bank of the River Trent at the edge of Nottingham city centre. The development comprises 35 contemporary, low-energy houses and 10 apartments, shaped around sustainability and long-term performance.

We designed the homes to respond directly to their riverside setting. Large windows and generous terraces maximise views, light and connection to the surrounding landscape.

The project required a fabric-first approach to construction, using highly-insulated building envelopes and varied brick colours to define individual housing blocks. This strategy established a clear architectural identity while improving energy efficiency.

We also placed an emphasis on improving the public realm here. A green, welcoming street leads residents to the riverfront, formed through a carefully balanced mix of soft and hard landscaping that will mature over time. As East Midlands architects, we aim to design buildings that sit comfortably within the region’s natural landscape. Phase one of Trent Basin reflects this ambition, delivering a sustainable residential environment shaped by its characterful setting.

Bingham industrial units

We designed the Moorbridge Road East site in Bingham to be well connected and easy to navigate. The existing road was extended, and we introduced three new access roads, allowing easy circulation throughout the development.

The development includes 36 light industrial units arranged across several blocks. A larger western block is paired with two smaller buildings with dual-pitched roofs, while mono-pitched units complete the scheme to the east.

We worked within a contemporary aesthetic, finishing the buildings in grey PPC (Polyester Powder Coated) cladding with green and blue trim and flashings. We enhanced natural daylight by integrating rooflights within profiled sheet panels.

External doors made from aluminium and steel were used to provide robust security. The result is a practical commercial development that strengthens local industry and reflects our outlook as architects working in, and working for, the East Midlands.

RIBA East Midlands architects

Our work has been recognised by leading industry bodies since 1987. We have received ten RIBA awards, five national and five regional, reflecting our long-standing commitment to excellence.

One successful RIBA award-winning project, Marsh House near Nottingham, was the only UK house outside of London to be featured in 100 of the World's Best Houses. In 2014 it was named one of The Guardian’s “top ten eco-homes”, where it was called “a truly inimitable self-build, a whole-hearted experiment in a live-work, low-energy lifestyle.”

We’ve also received several awards from the Civic Trust, including for the Lakeside Arts Centre, a thriving cultural hub positioned at the edge of the University of Nottingham’s boating lake.

Several regional awards recognise our contribution to the built environment of the region – these include the East Midlands Property Awards, the Nottingham Lord Mayor’s Awards for Urban Design and commendations from the Nottingham Civic Society.
