Nottingham Playhouse Extension

Between 1993 and 2001, the practice worked extensively at Nottingham Playhouse, carefully extending, refurbishing, and upgrading Peter Moro’s iconic modernist building. Conceived as a series of phased projects, the work was designed to be delivered without disrupting the theatre’s day-to-day operations.

Key elements included a new rehearsal space, refurbishment of the WCs, foyer, and back-of-house areas, and the installation of a new air handling system to improve comfort and performance efficiency. The final phase involved the remodelling of the theatre’s main square and its façade.

The transformation of the public square was undertaken in collaboration with artist Anish Kapoor and is now home to his celebrated Sky Mirror—a 6-metre polished stainless steel disc set on a black granite plinth above a bed of flowing water, creating a striking and permanent piece of public art that reflects both the theatre and the city around it.
