Project Update: The Grain Store

The development involves the conversion of an existing Grain Store into a single residential dwelling. The site forms part of a wider complex of agricultural buildings associated with an established farm.

The design approach seeks to respect and retain the inherent agricultural character of the existing building. The overall structure remains unchanged, preserving the original form, massing, and scale. External alterations are minimal, with the primary visual change being the introduction of timber cladding to the façade, helping to soften the building's appearance and integrate it more naturally into the rural setting. A small number of new openings provide adequate light and access, while remaining sympathetic to the existing structure.

A key design feature is the introduction of a central lightwell, created by forming an opening in the roof. This external space is open to the elements and functions as a landscaped courtyard at the heart of the building. The lightwell serves multiple purposes: it provides natural light and ventilation to the interior spaces, establishes a visual focal point, and enhances the internal layout by creating a private garden area overlooked by surrounding rooms. Doors at ground level provide direct access to the lightwell, while upper-level windows allow for additional light and views into this internal garden space.

Overall, the proposal balances the need for residential functionality with the desire to preserve the character and rural integrity of the original agricultural building.
