Project Description
This project replaces an existing single-storey house with a modern, sustainable home designed to meet the client’s long-term needs. Sustainability and low-energy design were central to the brief, with a strong focus on minimising carbon footprint while staying within budget.
The new dwelling adopts a gable roof that mirrors the original pitch of the demolished bungalow, maintaining harmony with the surrounding context. Cross gables and front-facing roof windows help preserve the character of the street scene, while two flat-roof dormers at the rear provide additional internal space without overwhelming the building’s form.
A generous entrance porch opens into a double-height hallway, naturally lit by a combination of side and high-level glazing. The internal layout is open and straightforward, with living spaces flowing directly to the rear garden at the same level—promoting a strong connection between indoor and outdoor living.
Architecturally, the design blends sensitively with its context. The use of simple volumes and gabled forms helps to break up the overall massing, contributing to a varied and attractive streetscape. A central feature gable on the front elevation—comprising full-height glazing and grey brickwork—adds visual interest and distinguishes the home from neighbouring properties.
Sustainability is embedded throughout the scheme. The design adopts a fabric-first approach, prioritising energy efficiency and thermal performance through high-quality insulation and airtight construction. Additional measures include the integration of photovoltaic panels, supporting a low-energy, future-ready lifestyle.
