The Old Grammar School

This Grade I Listed 12th-century former chapel and grammar school—also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument—underwent careful restoration as part of the £9.5 million regeneration of the nearby Coventry Transport Museum.

The project involved the meticulous repair of the building’s historic fabric, including the restoration of original lancet windows and leaded glass. Unsympathetic later additions in the rear courtyard were removed and replaced with a contemporary glass entrance, improving access while preserving the building’s character.

Internally, modern services were introduced for the first time, and several bespoke new doors and staircases were crafted to replace deteriorated originals. The result is a sensitively restored heritage building that is now available for private hire, giving new life to one of Coventry’s most important historic sites.
