Project Description

This scheme at 79 Maid Marian Way involves the refurbishment of an existing two-storey building alongside substantial side and rear extensions. The new Church Centre will accommodate a range of community-focused facilities, including a main hall with kitchen, training spaces and church offices.

The site’s historic context, its location within a Conservation Area, and its position on a prominent route have been central to the design approach. The proposal enhances the west elevation along Maid Marian Way with contemporary side wings, creating a unified and balanced frontage. The side and rear extensions feature large openings addressing St Nic’s Church and the site’s private yard, while the remaining elevations are more enclosed and robust in response to their exposed setting, incorporating smaller vertical windows.

The new side extension is clad in reconstituted stone, which wraps around the rear extension to create a dynamic and visually engaging elevation. This lighter, more articulated element contrasts with the more monolithic form of the rear extension, expressed in dark grey brick. Together, these materials contrast with the existing red brick of the original building, enriching the overall composition. The contemporary stone cladding, inspired by the stonework of St Nic’s Church, references the local heritage in a modern and respectful way.
